ABOUT DREW MA

BIOGRAPHY

Yiwei Drew Ma is a Chinese cinematographer and fine artist based in Greater Los Angeles. She finished her BA in Studio Art with honor degree and Summa Cum Laude at Stony Brook University. She is now pursuing her MFA degree with Film Production-Cinematography emphasis at Chapman University Dodge College.

“Thoughts about the current situation of society and the way of artistic expression” is the topic she has been pursuing for years. Art pieces are mirrors of reality.

She describes her style in the term "Emotional Realism". This is an abstract visual concept, and her interpretation of it is "rooted in reality, transcending reality." She aim to use her visual language to enable the audience to feel a connection between the imagery and the real world. Simultaneously, through the use of color and light, she strive to establish an emotional connection with the audience, often without their conscious awareness.

Her fine artworks were shown in Long Island, United States, including The Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery, Stony Brook, NY; Gallery North, Setauket, NY; Sunwood Estate, Old Field, NY. She is the recipient of awards, including the Virginia Fuller Award and Sunwood Competition. In addition, her film Loneliness was presented at the Undergraduate Film & Script Showcase at Stony Brook University in 2021 and won the Peral Award from Mastic Beach Mini Indie Film Festival.
